The DC universe has been trying to achieve the same success as the Marvel cinematic universe. Their first couple attempts were okay and started a lot of controversy among fans. Wonder Woman is the first DC movie that will be enjoyed by everyone.
Plot
Wonder Woman is the origin story of the hero. Born on an island full of Amazonian warrior women, Diana Prince realizes that she is meant to go protect others around the world. Once the god of war, Ares, starts World War I, Diana realizes she needs to stop him from destroying humanity.
Characters
Gal Gadot portrays Wonder Woman and she does a fantastic job. She was perfect casting for this role. She just wants to protect people. She doesn’t care about war strategy or the risk. She has an intense need to help people and Gadot does a good job at portraying this.
Chris Pine plays Steve Trevor and he does a really good job in this movie. He has no idea how to react to Diana and it actually creates some really funny humor. Gadot and Pine also both have really good humor.
I also really liked the supporting cast. Robin Wright is pretty badass as the role model for Diana. Connie Nielsen is good as the queen of the island and Diana’s mother. I think the best supporting character is Lucy Davis as Pine’s assistant. She is really funny in the movie and clearly is having a lot of fun with the role. The team that Chris Pine assembles is also really entertaining. They have really good chemistry with one another.
While I think the protagonists in this movie are DC’s best so far, I wasn’t a huge fan of the villain. Ares is very bland and he is a very standard villain. He wants to destroy humanity because he believes it is inherently evil and it is something I have seen a million times before in other superhero movies.
Direction
Patty Jenkins directs this movie and I thought that she did a great job. The action scenes are done really well and she does slow the movie down so that we can learn more about the characters and care more about them. The comedy in this movie is also done very well. It is definitely DC’s lightest film tone-wise.
I also liked the fact that this movie did not hammer in the feminist message. It is empowering to women, which is great, but it doesn’t do what most feminist movies do and make men look stupid, weak, or evil. It shows that both women and men can battle together equally and I think that is a much more powerful message.
My biggest problem with this movie is mainly the end sequence. It felt like such a departure from the rest of the film. It was the same CGI, blow-up fiesta that is in every DC film. It had a bunch of explosions, a villain who is just ranting about how evil humanity is and it just dragged.
They didn’t even hit each other. They just threw crap at each other for like a half-hour. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world, it was a bit disappointing.
Final Thoughts
However, Wonder Woman is still a very good film. The action is great, the characters are great and it is a solid superhero film. Hopefully, it puts the DC cinematic universe in the right direction.
Rating: 8/10
The Review
Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is the film that DC needed. It has a great, charming hero surrounded by a likable cast. The action is great, along with the emotional stakes. However, the final act falls back to a standard DC CGI-fest and falls flat. It's still a great introduction for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.
